Each October, students from the Hot Springs Sister City of Hanamaki, Japan, visit Garland County schools to learn about academic and cultural experiences of junior high and high school students in the Hot Springs area.  Sister school relationships have been established between Sasama Daini Elementary School and Fountain Lake Elementary School, Hanamaki Higashi High School and Lakeside High School, Hot Springs Junior Academy and Hanamaki Junior High, and Jessieville Middle Schools and Ohasama Junior High Schools.

Yesterday, at our HSSD Junior Academy, six Hanamaki Junior High and two Hanamaki High School students toured campus and spent dedicated time with unique programs and classes including the JAG (Jobs for Arkansas’s Graduates) classroom where they played American games and learned about the Hot Springs Button Company (a student-run JAG company that makes buttons/badges for sale in the community). They created and toured art projects in Mrs. Mitchell’s classroom. They spent time in HSJA Math and History classes. They also toured the chicken coop and urban garden.

Thank you to the HSJA staff and students who made our guests feel so welcome. Thank you to City of Hot Springs Sister City Program staff for all that you do to plan trips that showcase Garland County schools and area interests so well.
